Inquiry (Graduation)

Description: Every Thursday we do something called inquiry. We got to choose a group and I chose Graduation with Troy. In Graduation we have been split into small committees to contribute something to Gradution. I'm in decorations so that means me and about eight others. We have made stuff like Pom poms and a massive back drop saying 2015 with tissue paper. Gradution is at Palmerston North boys high school. We are going to the boys high hall to decorate a few days early.

Our focus for this inquiry is future generations and how we can benefit the next generation of R.S.S kids. We are benefiting the next generation by creating a Graduation that year 6s can remember.

Our other focus is out of the box thinking. The decorations group are thinking out of the box because we made a back drop not out of paper but crepe paper, tissue paper and chicken wire.

What did you accomplish? I accomplished an awesome back drop for the hall that's made out of tissue and crepe paper, it took us about 2-3 weeks to make it.

What was the most frustrating/ challenging thing? What difficulties did you encounter? The most challenging thing was making sure that the tissue paper did not fall out because if they all came out
then we would be wasting our time putting them in when we could be doing something else. Also we had to put tape on the back to make sure they stayed in and that took ages.

What was your proudest moment in your inquiry? Getting everything done like the Pom pom's and the back drop and the jenga blocks.

How will our inquiry groups impact the future? Graduation will impact the future because by this graduation others will be inspired and people around the world could see our graduation and also get inspired and then everyone will have fantastic Graduations thanks to us.

How did you show Agency, Creativity & Excellence? I showed agency by getting everything done in time for graduation, I showed creativity by thinking out of the box by making a back drop that was made out of tissue paper and chicken wire and showing persistence because we never gave up on the idea, and we showed excellence by trying to make this the best graduation ever.

Self directed learner

In poutama we have a agency wall. It has goals that will drive us towards being a self agentic learner

I think I am a Self Directed learner because I don't get told what to do because I have been naughty and I can be able to be left alone and the teachers know that I am doing the right thing. But I still have a little way to go until I am self agentic.

The goal that I am currently working on is I can cooperate in groups of different people

The things I need to do to achieve this goal are cooperate more with my group even if it is people I don't usually go with.

Here are my blooms questions that my partner Harriet sent me

Describe Kelly: Kelly is kind, caring and sporty

How would you feel if moter bikes tried to run you over: I would be totally freaked out and I would run as far away from them as possible.

What would happen if you combined Kelly and Carl: they would be really sporty, a tomboy, kind and caring at times and annoying at times.

Book bash

This term we are doing book bash we choose our three favourite book out of 11 I chose Esio trot, The spiral chrysalis and This Land We Call Home, then we got put into groups, my book is The spiral chrysalis, this is my pre workshop activity

Assess the cover design, blurb and title.
What made you choose this book?
What appeals to you?
What hooked you in?

Title: The title sounded really funny when I first heard it because it was just the spiral chrysalis, but once i had read the blurb it made sense . It is a really good title that is out of the box. It draws you in by just saying the spiral chrysalis it is like what does the spiral chrysalis do I want to read more.

Blurb:   The blurb sounded really adventurous and weird how it involved a chrysalis. It was very out of the box. I like how it's got at the end they have got a week to find a way out before the spiral fades away and the trio are trapped forever, that really hooked me in. The blurb was the thing that hooked me into the storey otherwise I wouldn't of chosen it by its cover or title.

Cover design: the cover design is really interesting and weird because it is just two heads looking at a chrysalis. I could have made a better cover to make it stand out to make others read it because a exciting cover hooks me in. I think that the chrysalis could have been more bold so it would stand out and people would want to read it.

Make some predictions about the story.  When and where do you think the story is set?  What do you think is going to happen?  Why?
I think the story is set in a Forrest and it is a dark late afternoon. I think they are going to come across lots of scary creatures and problems they need to overcome, like they all get split up and they could come across evil queens.

Pae tamariki

Description: On the 31st of July the schools kapa Haka group went to the regent to do pae tamariki. pae tamariki is a performance that shares passion for Maori culture. Four primary schools participated in it. We got to See what other schools did in there kapa Haka.

Here are videos of us

Big idea: At Pae Tamariki, I felt... A bit nervous even though I had done the songs a million times.

I felt most proud of… making the school proud and doing myself proud.

I found not being in the front challenging because I used to be in the front a lot but this time I wasn't.

I managed this challenge by smiling my hardest so I wouldn't be known as the grumpy girl in the back.

At Kapa Haka, I next want to... Be able to mange my challenge so I can work on other things

Aria you did really well even though you were nervous next time you could smile even more through all the songs

Passion projects

MkjjgjOn Thursday afternoons we are all split into 3 different groups pop art, drama and passion projects. I am in passion projects. Passion projects is when you create somthing that you are passioninte about. We do it every Thursday afternoon from 1:40 to 3:00. We had to find what we were passionate about.

I am passionate about traveling so I choose to make clothes from around the world. I am making a purple kimono. I have been doing some researching about some kimono patterns and pictures. I have got some kimono material and ribbon to make it with. I get my inspiration from cherry blossoms.

You have been working very hard, and a kimono is such a good idea, next time you could make things from lots of different places, not just Japan, but you have worked so hard.b

Evaluation: I have been having a bit of trouble on doing the sewing bit, but I have been getting a lot of planning through. I think I am going to get it finished.

In strategy maths we have been learning about times tables and division. I am in Elly A which is a stage six group. We have been given a task to work out these production questions. We had a times table question and a division question. We have been learning to use the box method, the box method Is when you draw a box and then if your number is 330 you would put 300 3/4 the way in and 30 on the other side. 6x5 equals 30 so you would put 5 on top of the 30. 6x50 is 300 so you would put 50 on top. You add them together and the answer is 55.
Here are the questions

Here are the answers

Feedback/feedfoward: that looks like really hard maths well done. The t looks like you really know hat you are doing-Bella m

Evaluation: I think that I am doing well at times tables but I think I could work on my division problems. I don't work out my division problems as fast as my times tables.

Production sample

Description: Every Friday we do production. We do are doing wearable arts. Life is our theme, in Maori its called ora. You got to chose what group you wanted to be in. There was Elements, what is Fire water wind and earth. Then theres out of Africa which is doing animals of Africa. The last one is Heroes and villains. I chose Elements, I chose wind because that's my personality. The task is to make a garment ( wearable art costume) that  can go on you.

My plan

My mood board

My progress

I have made a head peice out of wool and ribbon here's a photo

The next thing I have made is strings of bottle top lids to attach to my dress.

The next thing I have made is the top part of my dress. I have weaved plastic bags together. I am going to make another one for my back and I am going to attach them together.

Here is my finished garment,

1) The materials that I used to create my garment were: plastic bags, netting , white material, grey table cloth, glitter, milk lids, chopsticks, mask, ribbon and wool.

2) The most challenging thing about production for me was: trying to weave plastic bags it was difficult because I ran out of plastic bags half way through and had to start again and that really made me frustrated.

3) One way I demonstrated a growth mindset during production was: I kept going even through it was getting boring weaving the plastic bags but I knew that if I kept going I would look amazing with a plastic bag top.

4) Something I am really proud of about production was: I reused everything and I made every thing myself p.

5) Our school vision is to create agency, creativity and excellence. I showed this by: trying to think out of the box I did that by not using one plastic bag as a top but I weaved lots of bags together to make a top.

Writing sample

Description: In writing we have been given a task to write a story about a picture. We could write it in different ways like a narrative, news report Etc. I choose news report. We had to make up a story that matchs the genre we choose. The motivation came from the picture we were writing about.

Here is the photo:
Here is my story

Big Idea: I have been learning sentences, For example complex sentences. My specific goal is F,A,N,B,O,Y,S What means For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So. I decied to do FANBOYS as my goal because I am not using it in my writing. After writing this story I went through and added some more detail and impact. I have learnt to add complex sentences for example david scanned the hall looking for the culprit, while addressing the school.

Feedback/feedfoward: I like how you hooked the reader and add impact. Maybe next time you could add more fan boys and maybe complex sentences. -Zara

Evaluation: I think i did a really good job at making it like a news report but I could improve on putting some fanboys into my writing.

Reading sample

In reading we have been doing tic tac toes which are tasks to do with our goal. I choose a task called news report. In news report you have to read an article about the world body painting festival. I did my news report with bella. I was the reporter asking questions and Bella was one of the designers. We had to summarise the article to the main points.

Here is our news report link

Big idea: In reading I have been learning to summarise. Summarising is when you have a long story and you shorten it to the main points. From doing this task I have learnt to summarise the key points in questions like for example what categories are there in the body painting festival. This Ties into our learning because we summarised the article to the main points and put it into question form.

Feedback/feedfoward Well done girls. I think your questions were good.  They gave people an insight into the body painting champs. I think you need to think about a nice quiet place you could record your interview so there are less distractions. - Mum

Evaluation: I think that we have done really well except it wasn't really a summary. We could have known the script a bit more so we didn't have to look down so much. I think we did really well at showing that it was a news report.

Shark attack

On the news people were reporting on a shark attack in South Africa. For a tic tac toe we had to watch the video and write about the main points in our own way, but there's a catch we had to write it like a news reporter. Here's my article

Kapahaka portfolio sample

On Monday afternoon some of us go to kapahaka. Kapa Haka is when you go and learn Maori songs and you sing and dance to them. Sometimes we perform to people. The purpose of this is to share the moari culture with others.

Here is a picture of me doing kapahaka

At kapahaka I enjoy... Learning the moari songs and what there about. I also like sharing the moari culture

I am most proud of… inpiring others to do it because when I started no one wanted to do it but me, then Sophie and Zara thought it looked cool and joined. Then just this year Tabitha thought it looked really cool and joined.

I find pronounceing the words challenging because I always see the word and think that it's this but it's actually not.

I am managing this challenge by thinking before I say it

A personal goal for me is to get the pronunciation right

Our school wide focus this term has been around showing excellence. I show this at kapahaka by helping Tabitha in learning the words and actions

Feedback/feedfoward: I agree I think you inspired Sophie and I to do Kapahaka and I am having a blast, you could work on words the most
- Tabs

Writing portfolio sample

WALT: select words carefully to impact our audience
SC: We have been learning to use verbs, prescie nouns, adjectives and adverbs to add impact

Description: in writing we got a task to make a plan and story about a particular ball, you had to describe the ball without saying what it was. You had to use words like adverbs and adjectives. Verbs are a descriptive word, a prescie noun is a more prescie noun, a adjective is a descriptive noun and a adverb is to tell the how? When? Where?

Image: here is my planning

Big idea: here is my story
Zooming across the court, I glide from hand to hand. I am loving this tension of who they pass to its all down to this. They try to get me to the half circle and finally where there. The C and GA are trying to cheer on the GS by saying " you can do it" and " it doesn't matter if you miss" the GS says "I'm to small" she try's to pass me to the GA, I soar through the air and land in the wrong hands. The GK tries to pass but the GA leapt and gets the ball. The GA try's to shoot, I glide through the air onto the edge of the goal. I roll around and then boom I go through the hoop, yay everyone's happy saying yay. Maybe I do have a good life as a netball.

Feedback/feedfoward Wow Aria you did really well but I think you could work on putting more detail into your story otherwise you did really well - Sophie

Evaluation I think I did really well at describing with little hints on what the ball was without saying what it was.

Maths portfolio sample

At maths time we have been learning about strategy. We have been working on different ways to work out problems like equal additions, reversibility, rounding and compensating, place value and pationing.
We have been working out problems from the stage six maths book and recording and working it out in our book. In our latest workshop we have been given a sheet of products from rebel sport with a price, on the sheet there were some tasks like write two amounts that make a sum more than 550, make a sum of exactly 426 and make a difference of 134. ( in case you didn't know difference means take away.)

Here is the sheet

Here is my working out

Difference between 40 and 60
Sorry I failed I also worked some out on the whiteboard to they didn't work either!😕😩

The most common strategies I used were
Reversibility, equal additions and rounding and compensating

Feedback/feedfoward I think you made a clear picture in my head and you made the numbers clear
just next time make it a bit smaller Good job:) Tom H

Evaluation: I think I did a good job at working out the problems even though I asked a few friends what things equal like what's 136-75! Next time I could work on not asking friends and try to get it right the first and second time.

Science inquiry on Arctic foxes

In inquiry we have been learning about being a scientist. We needed to think like a scientist, predict, talk and present like a scientist. We were thinking about biological and behavioural adaptations. First we had to pick an animal that we had a question about, then we researched that question and made a presentation about the research. At the end we presentated it.
Here is my presentation

Feedback/feedfoward: I think you did a good job at using different pictures to add detail. Next time you could add more detail to the description. - Zara

Evaluation: I think I did a great job at my presentation because I made it interesting and added a question for next time. I think I need to work on adding detail to make it more exciting.

Reading sample

My goal for reading is comprehension and in comprehension we have been working on visualising the text and making text to text, text to world and text to self connections. If you were doing a text to text connection you would get a sentence from the book you are reading and connect it to some text you have read that is nearly the same from a different book.A text to world connection is almost the same but you are connecting text you have read to something happening somewhere in the world right now.Text to self is as well almost the same you read some text and you connect it to something you have done before or something you have seen someone else do.

Success criteria and evaluation:
Text to self:I think that I am good at text to self because to do text to self you really need to read through it and really understand what you are reading.

Text to world :I think that I am okay at that but I could get better by always thinking about it when I am reading a story or book.

Text to text:same as text to self I think that I really need to know what I read with every book I read so I think I am good at that.

Re-read::if I don't under stand what I read I don't just move on i stay on it to re read so I think that I am good at that.

Cause and effect:I think making predictions can really help me with this one and thinking.

Comparisons and contrast:thinking of other words that would fit into that sentence.

Here is the one tic tac toe I chose to do for this post.I shows how to make connections and what a connection.

Feedback and feedfoward: Wow Aria you did a really good job and I think you could improve on adding  a bit more detail but other wise you did really well-Sophie b

stay close to the attacking player
Head and eyes up, arms close to body to avoid obstruction/contact
Angle body so attacking player is ‘pushed’ away from where he/she wants to go
0.9m from ball carrier

Here are some videos of me doing defence

Evaluation: I think I do a really good job at most things in cmiyc but my main goal is to keep my eyes on the ball.

Feedback/Feedforward: I think that for your defence you are doing really well at keeping an eye on the ball and the player but you could move a bit quicker next time.-Bella m

Blockers and drivers

Task: take the photos from the doc and sort them into your blockers and drivers. Blockers are something that distracts you in your learning. A driver is some thing that helps you in your learning.
